Picture says it all.   Old coating is peeling off of door handles on my 2002 HSE.   Any thoughts?    Any good epoxy paints or other solutions to get this looking good again?

This is a common problem.  I had it on my '03 although not as bad.  Im the second owner and it would have been covered under warranty but the previous owner never asked for any remediation.  Too bad for me.

I corrected the problem myself.  The original paint on mine was enamel.  I used a lacquer base and clear coat and and it blistered, therefore I had to remove the entire paint system.  and redo from scratch.  It looks mint again and only took a few hours.

Make sure if you need to do this you get a stripper that is safe for plastics.

Thanks Bob.  Since I am somewhat of a paint-idiot, can you suggest a brand of either paint or stripper which might be safe?

Check with your local hardware store, there are a couple of paints made specifically to be used on Plastic. These paints are made to penetrate into the plastic.

I used trichloroethane, but I don't think you can get this (I work in a lab).  Check with a local paint shop like Mike suggested.  They also make an adhesion promoter  (primer) for plastics.  I used this as well.

Good luck
Bob

Thanks all!    I found another FAQ showing a how-to with Bulldog paint adhesion promoter and autotouchup base and clearcoat paints.

Now the only question is how to remove the outside door handles with the least amount of work.    I've done it before on Chevy's, but I am guessing that the panels are a little harder to remove on a RR.   If anyone has any links to other how-tos on removing the door handles on a 2002 RR please post a link.

Thanks.
