Over Heating

01' discovery I flushed my radiator and changed the fluid over to dex-cool, i didn't get all of the old fluid out because it was suggested not to remove the drain plug but to remove the radiator hose. So once i started filling up i noticed the left over fluid, i continued and topped the system off, i have tried to bleed the system as much as i could over the period of the last 2 months... But my heat hardly works now and my car over heats all the time, i sit still in traffic for 5 mins, and the car is over heating, any suggestions as to what it might be... maybe drain the fluid again from the drain plug and start from scratch... ?

YOU CANNOT MIX DEX-COOL WITH ANYOTHER COOLANT!!! Drain the system and do a complete flush. If you want to stay with Dex-Cool that is fine, but you MUST do a complete flush first.

yeah i figured that but someone here sugested i not remove the plug do to having issues later with air in the lines... Do you think mixing of the coolant is the culprit..

Yes, I think that mixing the coolants has caused a clog somewhere. I would remove the lower radiator hose and the t-stat housing and then do a complete flush of the radiator, heater core, and the engine block. Buy some coolant flush from the store and go from there. You know that continuing to overheat the engine will cost you $7,000 to fix, right?

Remove the hose from the t/stat, consider replacing the t/stat after drain whatever come out. Then give me a shout that will assure you of getting all the air out of the system, allowing your heater to work properly and the engine to not run hotter then it should. Also buy a bottle of Water Wetter or Purple Ice which you will add to the coolant while bleeding the system.

yeah i wont let the car over heat, once it starts to climb i pull over and shut it down, ive had it in the driveway for a month till i had time to address the situation... thanks for the assistance, ill get the supplys tomm and see if i can bang it out..

Never pull over and just shut it down, that is what kills an alloy engine. If you aren't throwing alot of coolant, turn both heater to full high and high fan speed and let the engine idle till it cools down, otherwise the engine will get hotter if you just turn it off and let it sit.

see the problem is that the heater was not throwing heat, and would not work in keeping the temp down, ive tried a million and one times, having the car on would just cause it to climb...

If the heater won't let out heat your coolant level is way to low, better bleed the system a couple of time and make sure when you are done that the coolant level is all the way up to the lid.

Are you bleeding it on a steep hill or something? (Try bleeding it pointing up hill)
