Hi all,

Recently acquired my first LR. Its a 1987 Defender 90 with a converted 300Tdi engine. When engaged in reverse, I get a consistent "clunking" noise. I'm guessing its the gearbox acting up but the mechanic reckon its the transfer box gears having "free-play" and needs to be looked at.

I've done some research on the internet and it seemed to be a known problem with the LT77 gearbox main output shaft not getting enough lubrication and eventually failing. I'm hoping I can get some advise, and hopefully save some $$$ avoiding fixing something that doesn't need fixing.

Thanks in advance.
