My 2001 Discovery II SE7 has a Stant aftermarket gas cap on it.  I've read in the owners manual that if the cap is not on properly it can give you a "check engine" light on the dash.  Can this aftermarket cap be causing this problem?

I just asked this a few months ago and they said it would not cause a problem. But I am getting the same code over and over again and I am beginning to wonder... What code are you throwing? (if you dont know, go by an auto parts store and have them read it for free). I cant remember my code right off, but it was something like, "gross emissions leak (large)". Let us know what code you have and we will go from there.

YES!!!
Everytime I put gas in the tank if I leave the trk running it will set off the CEL and give a emission/purge valve code.
Replace your gas cap.

Sometimes, if we are on a trip and it is cold out or it is really hot and we have the A/C on.
And no it isnt any more dangerous that putting gas in anyother time. Whats dangerous is getting in and out of your car while putting gas in.

Wow, I was always under the impression that the car had to be off! You learn something new everyday!

Nope, it doesnt "have" to be off, it is recommended though.

That is not an aftermarket gas cap, it's factory. Do you have a check engine light on, if so get the codes read and get back to us.

the reason that you shouldnt gas up with the engine on is for that very reason, the check engine light. physically theres no danger in it, if you were going to start a fire due to the engine running, it'd start gassing up or not
