Disco 2000 - engine starts, all seems fine, but can''t get gear shift to move out of Park. I noticed that the sound the brake makes (electronic click) when I shift to get out of park isn''t there. Checked fuses, ok and checked brake pedal switch that drives brake lights and the plunger seems to function ok. No brake lights and no front or rear fog lights - something electronic happening all the sudden. Is there a relay or fuse that isn''t obvious somewhere I should be checking?

If you dont have brake lights then your brake light switch is bad. If it is bad then you also cannot shift out of park.
Otherwise it is your neutral safety switch, but becuase you have no brake lights I say it is the brake light switch.

Go buy a brake light switch and next time it happens throw the new switch in. Keep the old one as a spare in the glove box.

A bad brake light switch keeps you from shifting out of park?? That seems like a bit of a safety over kill. Can you by-pass it? I would hate to be stranded on the trail because of a brake light switch.
