Hi guys, I have just bought a used 2005 Range Rover HSE and every once in a while when the car is started it sounds like it has no oil for a split second or so. Like knocking, etc. then it just goes away and sounds perfect and runs perfect.. To me it sounds like it is not getting oil, just for a second at start up.. Can anybody give me any ideas??? Thanks

It may have an incorrect oil filter on it.  It sounds as if the filter may be loosing its prime.

I know what priming is, but what does the filter have to do with it??..I just got the oil changed yesterday, and they have put in a new filter and it still does it.. Any other ideas guys... Thanks for all the great help....

you need new check valves for your vanos units... they leak down and cause the intake cams to have no oil press in them after the car sits for a while, this causes the noise you hear. theyre real checp and not too hateful to do

where are these Vanos units? Does someone have any diagrams or information on to remove them??  Thanks for the info... Everyone else, was saying it was normal and wouldn''t hurt the engine. Is that not true??

Thanks

yeah, it wont hurt the engine... the vanos solenoids are the things that stick out from the front cover and have connectors on the end, one for each bank... take off the fan and shroud, take off the rubber brackets that hold them in, then you need a special tool to get them out, unless you can find a very thin walled socket, its a 36 or something, not positive on that, but you take the solenoids out, then using a long bolt, thread the old check valve and pull it out, put the new ones in the same way

I posted the exact same issue a few months back:
http://www.landroverforums.com/m_70761/mpage_1/key_/tm.htm#70761

I received the same explanation and description for the fix.  I had my vehicle in the shop a few weeks ago for several days and they said they not only couldn''t reproduce it, but never heard of the check valve - I spoke directly with the technician.  Naturally, when I got in the vehicle at the dealer and fired it up, the rattle noise was there and no one was around.

Its since been very intermittent - about every third day in the morning primarily after the vehicle sits all night.

Who told you it wouldn''t hurt the engine and what was their explanation?  I''d really like to know if its a problem or not.

I purchased a Land Rover RAVE tech CD-Rom and found the check valves.  There''s a schematic I can probably cut and paste in here if you want.  My intention is to print the page out, return to the dealer and talk to the technician again - find out whether I can pull these myself.
