Sorry to start a new thread, but I cannot reply to the current thread.

http://www.consumeraffairs.com/automotive/gm_dexcool.html

You can still use DexCool, just do NOT mix it with any other kind of antifreeze, it will turn into a non pumpable goo.
As long as you flush the cooling system every 45,000 miles or 3 years you should be ok.
If I were you either I wouldnt use it or I would change it every two years.
As long as you use a engine coolant that is safe for aluminum engines and radiators you are good to go.
That is the key, safe for aluminum.

Any tips on draining the coolant? I would pull one of the radiator hoses off of its bottom mount and let it drain unless there is a better way to do it. I do not know when the last time (if ever) the coolant was changed.

Cheers,

Pete

I do no use DexCool and I change mine every two years, and here is how I do it.
Remove the lower radiator hose from the radiator. remove the upper hose from the engine, remove the thermostat and replace the goosneck without the thermostat.
Using the garden hose I back flush the engine by sticking the hose into the goosneck.
Then I stick it into the upper radiator hose and flush the radiator.
Re-connect both hoses and fill with water. Bleed thesystem. Turn heater to full hot and drive for 15-20 minutes.
Return home and let the engine cool for a hour, remove the lower radiator hose and drain all the water out.
Replace thermostat and gasket, refill with a pre mixed 50/50 mix coolant. Use the pre mixed stuff, they use disstilled water, your tap water has minerals and calcium and other things that can cause trouble.
You can use any anti-freeze that you want as long as it is safe for aluminum.
That is how I do it, its probally not the correct way to do it, but I have been doing it that way forever, thats how I learned in auto shop years ago and that is what works for me.
I do this every two years.
*Your results may vary.

Would the yellow Prestone be a suitable coolant for the Rover engine? Prestone states it is safe for aluminum engines which is necessary. I am considering swapping coolant before the winter arrives.

Cheers,

Pete

YES. The only thing you need to worry about is that it is safe for aluminum.

I found it was worth it to pull the block drains out as well, there is one on each side of the block. They look like they are hard to get at, but with the right wrench it was very easy and you will get quite a bit of old fluid out.
