2002 freelander se. bought used @32,000 mi. 2,500 into it noticed coolant smell and coolant loss. took to dealer. one later, they changed one oil cooler. less than 1,000 miles noticed same simptoms. took to dealer. three days later.said it was the head gasket.now it's happed again. i've noticed w\ the full synthetic oil the glycol doesnt mix like conventional oil does. so looks can be fooling. before you start your engine.crack drain plug. coolant will come outif enough has settled. what else could it be. is there a second oil cooler?

Had the exact same problem with my 2002 Freelander. Turned out to be a cracked block! (Well, I assume cracked, it may have been a casting flaw, or something.) Required three trips to the dealer before someone finally tested the cololant and found carbon monoxide contamination. Pressure-testing the radiator/cooling system never revealed the problem.

I was also recently in that similar annoying situation even though my car does not overheat. I suspected that the heater core was the problem, it turned out to be a cracked cylinder head.
