Hello,
Does anyone know what is involved with getting a 2002 Defender from Brazil registered in the USA? I am not sure if it is possible, but I am wanting to bring one up there.

might have to do some stuff for emissions since you're coming from South America.
I don't know what their laws are there.
since it's an 02, i'm sure that it is made for european laws, if so, i'll bet money it'll pass in USA.
good choice coming back to USA. There are several Texas folks on here.
I'm from Midland, there's one from Fort Worth area and I think one from Austin. Maybe one from houston, not sure.

From what I have been reading, the 2.5 liter diesel 4 cyldender is quite good on emissions and passes US Standards. I know it is the same design that is sold in Europe. My concern would be with crash test laws and what not. Also, this Defender is really fast off the line but tops out at about 80mph so it is a bit slow for US Highways.

Have you contacted the "Secretary of State" for the State you want to "title" the
vehicle in??? ( military personnel stationed in europe do this alot-when their tour
of duty ends --I was told by an x-airforce officer) so it's got to be a common
question for the vehicle registration people.

If the 1997 Defender 90 passed US safety rules, than would it be safe to assume that a 2002 Defender 110, which is the same car, just bigger, would also pass? Also, would I at least be able to bring the car into the country for a few months as a tourist and then sell it to some hunter in New Mexico with 1000 acres of land that would only use it off road? I think it may be worth it if I could do that. The Defender 110 is the ultimate SUV.

either that or i know a texan that you could sell it to, i'll drive it at the ranch!

There were only 300 Defender 110's sold in the USA, and they stopped before 1995, I think. I am looking and seeing these 1993 Defender 110s selling for about $50.
My Defender 110 is a 2002 model with about 60,000 miles (100,000 KM). It is in great condition. The 2.5 Liter Diesel gets great milage, puts out good low end torque but is a bit slow on the top end. You can max it out at 80mph. I have hauled as many as 12 people around the desolate areas in the north of Brazil with 200lbs of gear on the roof. It would a great SUV for someone looking for somthing for offroad use.
Tell your friend to make me an offer, and keep in mind that after 6 months in the USA it would not be approved for road use. However, I am sure after some modifications it would be approved by the DOT.
If the price is right, I'll drive it up there and be there in 6 weeks.

You can not bring a diesel in to the U.S. unless it over 20 years old to sell.
1997 was the last year for the D 90 after that it will not meet the U.S. safety code.
Sorry; A friend has a 97 Camel Disco diesel that has to stay in the U.K.
The D 110 NAS was one year 500 US and 25 for Canada.
You could get any color you wanted as long as it was white.
